This week
  1. Special Forces is a movie I watched last night starring Djimon Hounson who was awesome in the Russell Crowe Gladiator movie. The movie is about a French journalist in Afghanistan who is kidnapped by the Taliban. The movie was filmed in French and the characters are well portrayed.
  2. Crowd funding for clothes has arrived. My brother in law in San Francisco has pre ordered his super functional hoodie from Baubax. It has integrated technology pockets and a pull down eye mask ! Crowd funding is being applied in so many different and never thought about business models and is really changing the way products are delivered to the market.
  3. Over the holiday break I managed to catch up on lots of reading including this great article in the Harvard Business Review called "Why Organisations Don't Learn". The need to allow failure or testing or prototyping is so important for innovation but there is a bias towards success first. If we are to deliver innovation and therefore success we need to create the right environment to allow creativity to flourish.
  4. Botanical Innovations is an innovative Agribusiness located in Orange NSW. The company is an exciting biotech start-up based in Orange, looks like the basement of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. Vats, pools, pipes, valves, gauges and pumps fill the 550 sq. metre shed on the outskirts of town, where Managing Director Kerry Ferguson can be found deeply engrossed in the innovative R&D phase of her business.
  5. Electric bikes. I enjoyed reading this review of the top 10 electric bikes.

  1. 'The Destruction of Memory' is a film that I am supporting through crowd funding on the platform indiegogo. The film digs deep into the issue of cultural destruction, not just the present situations in Syria and Iraq, but the machinations of the past century and the decisions of the international community that got us to 'where we are'. Check out the newly released trailer here.
  2. Late at night I am reading 'The Poet' by master story teller Michael Connolly. Jack McEvoy specializes in death.  As a crime reporter for the Rocky Mountain News, he has seen every kind of murder.  But his professional bravado doesn’t lessen the brutal shock of learning that his only brother is dead, a suicide.
  3. An ironic article for those who are reading this email at work. Enjoy "The economics of Cyber loafing".
  4. Congratulations to a start up that I am supporting called Common Cents Fund who has recently secured a new client for their fund raising platform that brings transparency to the business of fund raising.
  5. "Why San Francisco Isn't the future of Tech", a good blog from the widely read and respected team at 'thefetch.

  1. This week I enjoyed reading an article called "The Fourth Industrial Revolution"
a fusion of the physical, digital and biological worlds through the "Internet of Everything". The opportunities are really exciting, for example using drone technology for weed management on farms is just awesome. Execution and agility will be keys to success, not just cool ideas. Good project managers needed here.
  2. There are some very cool shipping container house ideas here. The challenge is to re use existing materials in new and effective ways. A project idea that some day I would like to have a go at.
  3. An awesome and inspiring British artist David Hockney. David is an English painter, draughtsman, printmaker, stage designer and photographer.
  4. If you have ever been inspired to read, or try and read great literature by Marcel Proust but have struggled with the length and complexity, well now there is a graphic novel, done in the theme or style of the Tin Tin books. The first one is "In Search of Lost Time: Swann's Way". Too easy and a very cool gift idea.
  5. The NRL is coming to Orange NSW this weekend, for a pre season game between theKnights vs Raiders. Now if we can just get Manly to cross the Blue Mountains, that would be perfect.

This week's Friday five.....
  1. Jeremy Morgan is the leader and founder of Rockridge Group. I have worked a little bit with Jeremy in the past and have always been impressed by his customer first attitude to deal management. Rockridge is a private investment and advisory firm specialising in the technology, digital media and telecommunications sectors. Worth having a look at.
  2. Should the weather ever get cold again I have my eye on some of this kit fromPeak Performance.
  3. Co working spaces continue to grow in popularity as more companies start up and only need temporary office space. Here is a review of some of the best co working spaces in Australia from the Australian Financial Review. Some useful ideas for corporate real estate types as well as the move to activity based working continues in big corporates.
  4. A Manual for Cleaning Women is my pick this week for a good book.....not what you think !!
  5. Another business that is embracing the digital revolution is Bryton Wool in Canowindra. The business, established in 1973 and taken on by Geoffrey Beath and his wife Sue in 1992, now has warehouses in Canowindra, Young, Crookwell  Forbes and Oberon, and around 4,000 growers on the books. Business has grown solidly over the past two decades, but it is in the last five years that the most significant growth has occurred and it is all down to taking on digital innovation.

Statement of Work Templates and checklists

26/2/2016

The Statement of Work (SOW) is a document, which describes the scope of work required to complete a specific project.  It is a formal document and must be agreed upon by all parties involved.

In order to be effective, the SOW must contain an appropriate level of detail so all parties clearly understand what work is required, the duration of the work involved, what the deliverables are, and what is acceptable.

Remote Project Management

14/2/2016

Recently I saw an interesting question posted on reddit about Remote Project Management.

With more and more business being managed as projects there will be increasing need to use and therefore work effectively with remote project teams.

Contents of this blog post.

How to work with remote teams
  • Set regular communicate catch ups
  • Set clear defined objectives and milestones and monitor progress
  • Loop in remote staff as required
  • Team meetings to let everyone have a voice
  • Encourage team-building activities in location if people are co located.
  • Visit them
  • Know local holidays and working hours
  • Get the best from time zones.
  • Track and measure

This post is part of a number of articles on projects, you can read more here.
  • Video: How to price your project
  • Project delivery checklist
  • PMO Project checklist
  • Starting up a project a checklist of 101 things to think about

There is also lots of useful stuff on project management methodologies and how to start a project and checklists that you can use.

There are also some useful templates that you can use to start a project including a statement of work template. Also the most popular product, a simple to use template to price your project so that you can actually see if you will make or lose money.

The future of work and Remote Project Management

There are several macro trends that are driving changes to the how the work place of the future will be.

These include

•    More collaboration, in particular with the community of interest that surrounds the business or project
•    Non hierarchical organizations with flat structures that ebb and flow and come together for projects and then disperse.
•    A borderless workforce, no longer will you just go to the talent pool in your company, office, state or country. You will seek out and engage with the best resources and at the best price.
•    The sharing economy continues to drive business to come together to solve problems and the inputs and actions of resources to work on these projects will not always be co located.

These macro forces or waves of change mean that project managers must have the skills and experience to work with remote teams and drive the project and collaboration of people who are often not often located in the same country or even in the same time zone or even sharing a common language.

Fun and challenging times.
