  1. In the theme of agriculture I came across this business called KG2 which is using big data to help Australian agricultural businesses make better decisions. Enabling the farmer and industry to leverage the most comprehensive agribusiness dataset for mutually beneficial outcomes.
  2. On twitter this week I have started following Sebastian Junger author of The Perfect Storm, War, and Tribe; co-director of the Oscar-nominated @RestrepoMovie; founder of @risctraining.
  3. For those looking for their next board appointment in NSW Australia, the Local Land Service of NSW is looking for new board members. Appointments are for up to three years and members are paid remuneration and allowances set by the Department of Premier and Cabinet. Remuneration for Chairs will be $60,000 per annum and $20,000 per annum for local board members.
  4. Winter reading starts here. The first book on the list is Rise of the Robots: Technology and the Threat of a Jobless Future by Martin Ford.
  5. The DEV OPS team have started using Trello to manage their chaos....will watch and see.

  1. I found this awesome website/blog that combines Lego and farming.Little BRICKPastoral celebrates Australian agriculture through unique photos of a Lego®  farmer. Just so simple, yet brilliant.
  2. Showing just how creative people can be, I checked out this short youtube video of a performance on 99 Red Balloons - played with red balloons.
  3. Shifting career path and learning new things in midlife is never easy, but your brain may thank you for the effort. A short but thought provoking article on the mid life crisis in theAFR.
  4. If you are in San Francisco it is worth checking out Chez Panisse. I was reminder  this week of several enjoyable lunches. Chez Panisse opened its doors in 1971, founded by Alice Waters and a group of idealistic friends. A neighbourhood bistro, it is named after Honoré Panisse, a character in Marcel Pagnol’s 1930s movie trilogy about waterfront life in Marseille (Marius, Fanny, and César), as an homage to the sentiment, comedy, and informality of these classic films.
  5. I found a great example of an ebook here. Not only it is a useful read for what an ebook should be but it is useful content on B2B marketing.

  1. Now that I have done my last ocean swim for the season I can look forward to this movie ! In the taut thriller The Shallows, when Nancy (Blake Lively) is surfing on a secluded beach, she finds herself on the feeding ground of a great white shark. Though she is stranded only 200 yards from shore, survival proves to be the ultimate test of wills, requiring all of Nancy's ingenuity, resourcefulness, and fortitude.
  2. Maybe Blake should have had this from SMS. Shark Mitigation Systems (SMS) is an Australian company based in Perth, Western Australia. Perth is located on a stretch of coastline that has recently experienced the highest incidence of fatal shark attacks in the world with 6 deaths in the period between August 2010 and July 2012 (ISAF, Florida Museum) and has become a global focal point for research and innovation in the field of shark science.
  3. This month is shaping up as a turning point for start-ups in the US because May 16 marks the beginning of a new law to encourage crowd-sourced equity funding under a law called the Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act (JOBS Act). More shark tank activity is predicted.
  4. 8 Qualities That Make Great Bosses Unforgettable.
  5. And if you have not had enough shark references you could always enjoy the awesome DVD series "BBC Living Planet- Great White Shark".

This week
  1. Thanks to my friend Michael Scott I participated in last weekend's Bold and Beautiful Swim squad at Manly. A great swim from Manly beach to Shelley Beach and back again done at first light on Sunday morning. We saw heaps of fish a few rays and even the odd white tip reef shark. Amazing and a great way to start the day and the coffee afterwards tasted so good. Thanks
  2. Like most of the world I am enjoying the return of GOT and I loved reading this update on Jon Snow in the New Yorker. Not a spoiler alert if you are up to date.
  3. Agriculture in Australia continues to interest me and the potential for application of innovation to farming practices from data driven decision making to enhanced cold supply chain. I met some of the guys from Mercado this week, who are using market analysis to drive better informed decisions.
  4. I have always loved architecture, the beauty and the possibility. My other career choice would have been to study architecture. This blog allows me to follow the work of others on the road not taken (with apologies to Robert Frost).
  5. If you need to launch an app for your blog or website I cam across dwnld which take your content and very quickly makes an app ready for all of the stores. Maybe something for the future !!

It is Friday 5pm somewhere.....time to log off and enjoy the weekend. In the meantime, enjoy a short but beautifully curated selection of randomness from around the web.

This week
  1. The Amazon Web Services event was in Sydney this week and the energy levels have spiked. It is already a game changer whether you use it for cheap storage, compute or elastic banding your capacity at peak times.
  2. I have been reading "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost and discussing it with my kids. They got the idea that sometimes you have to be an individual and choose your own path but they also thought it might mean that the two roads are the same, but you will never know because you choose one over the other.
  3. Shipping container housing ideas keep popping up in my feed and I keep thinking about ideas about what I would like to build. If you have other sites where there are good designs I would love to know about them.
  4. As "winter is coming" and If you need to get a new blazer here are some ideas.
  5. A dark fibre (or dark fiber) or unlit fibre is an unused optical fibre, available for use in fibre-optic communication. The term dark fibre was originally used when referring to the potential network capacity of telecommunication infrastructure, but now also refers to the increasingly common practice of leasing fibre optic cables from a network service provider, or, generally, to the fibre installations not owned or controlled by traditional carriers. I was reading this article on wikipedia this week and found it interesting.
